Rains

Little drops of water falling from the sky, making puddles, springing up of lush greenery to fill the hearts with joy: this is what the first rain after the summer at Kerala is like. Kerala is a place where it rains almost through out the year. This land is known for its water resources that are rejuvenated by the rains.

Rainwater is used for irrigating the rice fields and also in making power in its hydel power projects. The hydel power projects are mainly located in the Idukki district as it has got many hills and valleys. The rainwater fills the dams in this area, which release the water to spin the water turbines and make the power.

The scenic beauty that rains bring to this place is both magnificent and amazing. The lives of people here are based on the rain cycle. Rains can be called as the lifeblood of this place. It plays an important role in making Kerala God’s Own Country.

There are mainly two important spells of rains in Kerala. The first spell occurs during the months of june-july called edavapathy and the second called thula varsham occurs during the months of October and November.

Thus rains have got significance in Kerala. Without timely rains, the agriculture will suffer, the power production will fall down and lack of rains will affect its scenic beauty. Nowadays with the expansion of cities and towns, the rate of deforestation has increased. This affects the amount of rain that Kerala gets. So planting of more trees and conserving Kerala’s forests has become a necessity.
